Configuring Internet News

Internet News is the IP News-Reader client included with the Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser. Here is the process to check and/or edit these settings. Fortunately it's a fairly easy process.

To get there, choose ONE of the following.
Note: The first method is generally better, since opening Internet Explorer usually brings up a Connect to window, which might confuse the user. However, some users (including NT users) might not be able to do the first method.

Method 1

  • Click Start.
  • Click Programs.
  • Click Internet News.
  • Method 2
    • Open Internet Explorer (double-click on The Internet icon).
    • Click on the Mail button.
    • Choose Read News.

You're now in the main Internet News window. The only settings you need to worry about are under Options... in the Mail menu.

    Configuring Internet News

    1. Choose Options from the Edit menu in the MSIE browser window.
    2. Click on the Programs tab.
    3. Click on the 'News' button.
    4. Set the News server to news.hei.net

    Using Internet News

To open MSIE's news client choose Read Newsgroups from the Go menu.

Internet News will appear just like a web page in the MSIE browser window.

A list of available newsgroups will appear.

Note: Internet News may need to build a list of the groups. This can take several minutes, especially if you have a slow modem connection.

To refresh the newsgroup list, choose Refresh from the View menu.

The newsgroups list is actually a list of hierarchies. A hierarchy is the top level of organization in a newsgroup.

    Favorite Newsgroups

Newsgroups that you plan to read often can be added to the 'Favorites' list.

To add a newsgroup to the favorites list:

    • Click on the group you wish to add and then go to the Favorites menu and choose Add Favorite. You can pick any number of groups to add.
    • To remove a group from the Favorites list, choose Edit Favorites from the Favorites menu.
    • Highlight the group you want removed, then click on the Remove button.
    • Now, in the Favorite menu, all of your choices are listed for easy access.

    Reading News

      1) Click on the newsgroup name.

      2) Click on the article you want to read.

The contents of the article appear on the screen.

    Replying To And Posting Articles

You can reply to an existing article by posting a response to an existing article, or posting a new article.

When posting a response article always delete any part of the article you do not want to include in your response. Remember to leave enough so that people understand the context, but not to leave the parts that are not relevant. Always make sure you give credit to people for their ideas.

Posting A New Article Or Replying To A Post

    1. Click on the group you want to post to.
    2. Click on the 'Post a Message' link if you want to post a new message not related to an exisiting post. If you would like to respond in the newsgroup to something posted, click on the message you wish to respond to, then click on the 'Post a response' link.

      The Message Composition window appears.

    3. Check the "Newsgroup" field. Make sure you are posting to the correct newsgroup.

To post to more than one newsgroup, type more newsgroup names. Separate the names with commas.

    4. Type a short but descriptive line for the "Subject" field. The more informative and accurate this is, the more likely interested people are to read your article.
    5. To attach a document, please see MSIE's online handbook for directions. Choose Help Topics from the Help menu.
    6. Type your article.
    7. Click on the 'Post' button in the upper right hand corner of the message composition window.
    8. Click OK.

That's all there is to it!
