What You Need to Get Started:
A Windows 95 machine with a functioning Internet connection
The Internet Mail Service Update, available free from Microsoft by clicking here
Step 1: Verify that MS Exchange is
Installed
Press the button, select Settings..., then
Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select the Windows Setup
tab and make sure the Microsoft Exchange option is selected. Press Details... to make sure
that the Microsoft Exchange option is installed. If it is, go on to the next step. If it isn't,
select it and click OK. Windows 95 will attempt to install the needed drivers, so make sure you've
got your installation disks or CD handy! Now that MS Exchange is installed, you can proceed to the
next step.
Step 2: Run the Internet Mail Service
UpdateClick here to download the
Internet Mail Service Update from Microsoft. You can either open the progam when prompted by your
browser, or save it to disk and double-click the downloaded file. This update will place all the
necessary files for Internet Mail Service on your hard drive.
Step 3: Install the Service in Microsoft
ExchangeOnce the drivers are on your system, you need to place
the Internet Mail service in your Exchange profile. Press the button, choose Settings, and then
Control Panel. Open the Mail and Fax option. All the services used in your default profile
will be displayed. The dialog box looks like this (if you
have more than one profile, select Show Profiles and select the profile to which you wish to add
the Internet Mail service before continuing). In the Mail Properties box, press the Add...
button, then select Internet Mail from the list. This will add the service, and open the Internet
Mail Properties dialog box so you can configure the Internet Mail Service options.
Step 4: Configure the Internet Mail
ServiceThere are two tabs in this dialog box in which you can
add or change settings, so both are explained below. In each case, you can click on the section title to
get a picture of the dialog box with the correct options selected.
General
Tab Fill in the Personal Information section with your
name and your full email address.
Next, fill in the Mailbox Information with your Internet mail server address which
is mail.hei.net. Then put in your mail account name and password (these are usually the
same as your regular username and password you use to log into HEI in dial up connection).
If you press the Message Format button on the General tab, you can choose to use MIME
formatting when sending messages, and you can choose the character set for sending messages. This is
especially useful for non-US character sets. This dialog box looks like this.
If you press the Advanced Options button on the General tab, you can choose a separate
outgoing mail server for your Internet mail. You need to put mail.hei.net in this text
box. This dialog box looks
like this.
Connection
Tab From this tab, you can select how you want to connect to
your Internet mailbox. If you're on a LAN, select Connect using the network. If you're using
Dial-up Networking, then choose Connect using the modem, then select the HEI dial-up
profile
you use for your Internet connection.
You can also choose whether or not to use the Remote Mail window in Exchange for Internet mail.
This allows you to only download the headers of your email messages, and then decide which messages to
download later.
Additionally, you can use this tab to specify a log file to trace unusual or important mail
events.
Step 5: Run Exchange and Use Internet
MailFind the Inbox icon on your desktop and double-click
it to open Exchange.
If you set up Internet Mail to use Remote Connection in the Connection tab above, select
the Tools menu, then select Remote Mail and Internet Mail. You'll get the Remote
Mail window, which looks like this.
Select the Connect button from the toolbar, or choose Connect from the Tools
menu.
If you had mail waiting, it should appear in the window. If you have no mail waiting, send a message to
yourself to test your connection. Refer to the Exchange online help files for more instructions on using
Exchange.
Using Exchange for Internet Email and
FaxesIn order to use Exchange for Internet email as well as
outgoing faxes, you may need to set up an additional profile. Sometimes, because of the way Exchange
handles mail object delivery (it treats faxes as mail objects), outgoing faxes may never send if you use
the same profile as your Internet mail. If you have problems with multiple delivery types, refer to the
Exchange online help files for instructions on setting up a new profile, then use one profile for mail,
the other for outgoing faxes.
