Windows 95/98 Setup/Support


  

Thank you for selecting HEI as your Internet Service Provider. We are here to make your Internet experience the best it can be. These instructions will walk you through the step by step setup of Windows 95 for Internet dial-up access. You will need to have your WIN95 diskettes or CD readily available, also if you have an external modem, verify it is powered on and connected to your PC. IF YOU ALREADY HAVE INTERNET ACCESS, SKIP TO CONFIGURE DIAL-UP NETWORKING! (Step C)


STEP A. Install Dial-Up Networking

  1. Turn on your computer and verify all applications are closed.
  2. Bring up the Control Panel by clicking on Start, Settings, and then Control Panel.
  3. Double click on the Add/Remove Programs item in the Control Panel.
  4. If you get prompted for a computer and workgroup name you can enter any name in both those places.
  5. Move to the Windows Setup tab and highlight the Communications item. Next, click on the Details button.
  6. Make certain that Dial-Up Networking is checked. Click Ok to instruct Windows 95 to install these components.
  7. Click Ok again and follow the Windows 95 prompts, you will be left at Control Panel.
  8. Shutdown and restart your PC. You have now installed Dial-Up Networking.

 

STEP B. Install Network Protocols


We will now configure the TCP/IP. This is what your computer will use to talk to the Internet.

  1. Click on the Start button, select Settings, then Control Panel, and then Network.
  2. If Client For Microsoft Networks is missing, click on Add, click Client, click Add, click Microsoft, click Ok.
  3. If Dial-Up Adapter is missing, click on Add, Click Adapter, click Add, click down to Microsoft for a manufacturer, click on Dial-Up Adapter, click Ok.
  4. If TCP/IP is missing, click on Add, click on Protocol, click Add, click down to Microsoft for a manufacturer, click on TCP/IP, click Ok.
  5. Click on TCP/IP to select it, then click on the Properties button. Click on the WINS Configuration tab and verify that Disable Wins is checked. If it is not checked, then check it. Click OK.
  6. Next, make sure the Primary Network Logon is set to Windows Logon.
  7. Click on OK. Click on YES when your system asks you to Reboot.
  8. You have now completed the TCP/IP configuration.

 

STEP C. We will now configure Dial-Up Networking.

  1. Double click on the My Computer icon, and then double click on Dial-Up Networking.
  2. Double click on Make New Connection.
  3. Enter HEI for name of computer.
  4. Verify Modem is the modem you have installed and click on Next.
  5. Click on Area code enter YOUR LOCAL AREA CODE, then click on Telephone Number and enter 314-2119 for Vancouver, or the number for your local dialing area and click Next. (Local Numbers here)
  6. Click on Finish. Your new Connection will now be displayed.
  7. Select the HEI icon. Click on the RIGHT mouse button and select Properties.
  8. Verify that Use Country Code and Area Code is NOT selected.
  9. Click on Server Types.
  10. The Type of Dial-up Server should read PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.
  11. Under Allowed Network Protocols, make sure TCP/IP is checked, and NetBeui and IPX/SPX are not checked.
  12. Under Advanced Properties make sure Enable Software Compression is checked, and Logon to Network and Require Encrypted Password are not.
  13. Click TCP/IP Settings. Verify Server assigned IP address is selected.
  14. Click on Specify Name Server Address. Select Primary DNS and enter 204.178.185.105
  15. Click on Secondary DNS and enter 209.222.163.130
  16. Click OK, Click OK, Click OK
  17. Right click on the HEI icon and click Create a shortcut. Click YES to create shortcut on desktop.
  18. Double click on HEI icon and set user name to your login username. Make sure you enter the username as if it was your email address assigned by HEI, (i.e.: sparky@hei.net). Click on Password and enter your password.
  19. The above two fields are case sensitive. Verify Username and Password are in lowercase.
  20. Click Connect. You should be online shortly.

If you encounter problems, verify all settings are correct and all are in LOWER CASE.

You must now Internet Explorer, Internet Mail, and Internet News If you already have a browser on your computer, you may skip these steps. But you will have to configure for email, settings are at the end of the setup guide.

Email Settings for users with different browsers.

Incoming Mail Server (POP3) - pop3.hei.net

Outgoing Mail Server(SMTP) - smtp.hei.net

POP3 Username - yourusername (all lower case and one word do not include the @hei.net, example email address sparky@hei.net would have a pop3 username of sparky)

Your email address will be yourusername@hei.net
