MacTCP & MacPPP Setup

Setup

  1. Place the "Config PPP" file in the Control Panels folder inside the System Folder.

  2. Place the "PPP" file in the System Extension folder inside the System folder.

  3. From the Apple Menu, open Control Panels and select MacTCP. When the MacTCP window opens, make sure that the MacPPP icon is selected. Click on the "More" button at the bottom of the MacTCP window. The settings should be:

    Obtain Address: Server
    Gateway Address: 0.0.0.0
    Class: C
    Domain: hei.net
    1st IP Address: 209.222.163.130 2nd IP Address: 209.51.92.130

  4. Close MacTCP.

  5. From the Apple Menu, open Control Panels and select Config PPP.

    The settings should be:

    Port Name: Modem Port
    Idle Timeout (minutes): None
    Echo Interval (seconds): Off
    Terminal Window: not selected
    Hangup on Close: selected
    PPP Server: hei.net

  6. Next, click on the "Config..." button (in the lower left corner). The settings for this window should be:

    Port Speed: 115200 (or slower if your modem does not support data compression)
    Flow Control: CTS & RTS (DTR)
    Tone Dial: selected
    Phone Number: 260-5257 (For Vancouver)
    Modem Init: ATZ (or whatever modem initialization string works for your particular modem.)
    Modem connect timeout: 90 seconds

  7. Next, click on the "Connect Script..." button (in the lower left corner). The settings for the Connect Script are as follows:

    Wait timeout: 90 seconds

  8. Click on "OK" to close that window and "Done" to close the Config window. At this point you are ready to start a PPP connection.

Starting a PPP Connection

  1. With the "Config PPP" window open (see #5 above), click the "Open" button at the top of the window. A window will open that says "MacPPP Status: Initializing Modem", then "dialing modem", then "Waiting for text: Selection", then "Waiting for text: Username", then "Waiting for text: Password", then "Establishment", and finally "Network". When it gets to that stage, the MacPPP status dialog box will close.

  2. The two little smiley faces in the upper left corner of the MacPPP window should now be smiling. :-) Now you can open client applications (such as Netscape, Mosaic, Eudora, NewsWatcher, etc.)

  3. To end your PPP session, click on the "Hard Close" button in the "Config PPP" window.

Configuring Eudora Mail Program

  1. Open the Eudora program and click on the Special menu, then select Configuration. The settings should be:

    POP account: username@hei.net
    Real Name: Your Name
    Connection Method: MacTCP
    SMTP Server: mail.hei.net
    Check For Mail Every: ____ Minutes(s) (this can be left blank or you
    can assign an interval.)
    Ph Server: leave blank
    Dialup Username: leave blank

  2. Now click on OK to close the window and Eudora is ready to go. Click on the File menu, then select Check for Mail and Eudora will envoke MacPPP to dial your modem and connect your computer (if you aren't already connected) and check for your email.

Configuring NewsWatcher News Program

  1. Open the NewsWatcher program and click on the File menu, then select Preferences.

  2. In the NewsWatcher Preferences window, select the Topic for "Server Addresses". The settings you will need to type in are:

    News Server: news.hei.net
    Mail Server: mail.hei.net

  3. Click on OK to close the window and NewsWatcher should be ready to go.
